DO YOU HAVE SCRATCHES ON YOUR AUTO GLASS?

It is possible to remove small scratches out of your car’s windows to make look brand new again. It is important to know that depending on the size of the scratch will depend on how well the method works on it. These methods are meant for smaller scratches that can be treated at home. Depending on how big the scratch is will determine if you should go to a professional Toronto auto glass shop or not.

It is easier to treat very small scratches in glass; however, you should note that these methods maywork but there is no guarantee that they will. For very small scratches you can try using toothpaste. This method will work on the smaller scratches that just irritate you out of the corner of your eye, but scratches that are more noticeable and deep will most likely not respond to this method. The first thing you’ll want to do is squeeze a small amount of toothpaste onto a clean polishing cloth. You’ll want to use white toothpaste to get the best results. Then, rub the toothpaste over the scratch and repeat as needed. After this, you’ll want to wipe of the toothpaste that is left on the glass with a clean, damp cloth and check and see if the scratch is still there or not.

Also for small scratches, you could try an ammonia solution on the glass. You want to combine 3 cups of water with half an ounce of ammonia. Once the solution is created, you’ll want to dip a soft cleaning cloth into it just enough to dampen it. Then you’ll want to rub the cloth in a circular motion over the scratch and then wipe it clean. After doing this, you can check and see if the scratch has gotten better. If not, you can repeat the last step.
For larger scratches you can look into a proprietary product that is made to deal with fixing glass scratches. You can find these kinds of tools at a furniture or hardware store. You can ask the retailer for a professional glass repair kit. You want to explain to them what the glass scratch is on and how thick the glass is so they can give you the proper tools. You’ll want to follow the instructions on the kit. Consult with a Toronto auto glass professional before you actually purchase a kind, as some of them are known to be faulty.

Also for larger scratches, you could use jeweler’s rouge with a buffing pad or car polish. When it comes to doing either of these things, the steps are very similar; however, it is recommended that you use the car polish over the jeweler’s rouge. You can either select a glass polishing kit that comes with polishing discs to remove the more severe scratches in your glass or you can buy a high quality glass restore to remove any light scratches or spots on the glass. You want to use a low speed rotary polisher. It’s recommended that the speed setting be set in between 1000 and 1200 RPM. Also be sure to check and make sure that your polisher has a polishing pad on it. You want to put your lubricating oil on the polishing pad to help the polish spread more and reduce the amount of polish will actually need to use. Once you do this you can apply the polish to the polishing pad and polish away.
The last method is to just seek professional help. When all else fails, it’s best to just go to someone who specializes in the job. You don’t have to be superman and fix it yourself. Granted it may cost more than it would to do it on your own, but the job will get done properly.

HOW CAR WINDOWS ARE MADE

When cars were first invented by the Richmond Hill auto glass team members, they had an open air concept. Firstly because they did not have windshields back then and secondly noone ever thought that one day we would move fast enough to have a need for protection against debris. In 2014, the speed detector on top of a Hennessey Venom GT began to malfunction because of the vibrations generated by the air molecules around it. Windshields are not made of your typical every day glass. It does not need the craftsmanship of a glass blower but making one is not easy.

Windshields used to be made out of tempered glass. It is glass that is made under a higher temperature, to make it sturdier and more durable. Now all windshields are made of laminated glass. It is like tempered glass but the cool thing about it is that it actually bends upon impact making it less likely to shatter. In fact by law all automakers have to use laminated glass.
Being glass, around seventy percent of a windshield is silica, soda ash is added to reduce its melting point, dolomite is added to make it easier to shape when in liquid form. What makes car glass different is, limestone. Richmond Hill auto glass experts have said that car windshields have limestone in them to make the final product stronger. Windshields have to be strong because it actually holds most of the weight of the roof. So your windshield is not one layer of glass but three. The layer in the middle is made of poly-vinyl, so anything hitting a windshield would have to be high impact to penetrate through the second layer.

The ingredients for the glass are all mixed with water and heated till it melts. Then the mixture is funnelled into a ‘float’ chamber. This chamber has a thin layer of molten tin upon which the mixture floats, hence the name of the process and the chamber. From here it is transported to the cooling chamber, where it is cooled slowly. This is where the windshield manufacture begins. The glass from the cooling chamber is used as the raw material. To make the shield, the glass is cut according to specifications by a cutter called the ‘scribe’. This glass is so hard that the scribe has an unrefined diamond head.
The glass sheet is placed on or into a mould with the desired curvature and shape. It is heated just to the point where it becomes soft but does not melt, so it just sags into the mould. When in the mould it is rapidly cooled by pressurized cold air. This process is called tempering the glass. A thin layer of poly-vinyl butyral is sandwiched between two sheets of glass, heated and pressed with rollers. Now the windshield is ready to be installed on the car. Different cars have different windshields, so the sizing is done by the scribe before the tempering.
You can change the building material for a car. Exotics can be made with everything from carbon fibre to all sorts of weird alloys, as long as it passes a crash test it can be put into production. Windshields are more specific and it is a long and tedious process.

HOW TO LOWER YOUR WINDSHIELD REPAIR COSTS

Fixing just about anything that has to know with your car can be quite costly – and this surely does include windshield repair. In the Greater Toronto Area, over 50% of the population is unfortunately welcomed to a crack or chip on their windshield. North York auto glass companies continue to see a rise in customers due to poor road conditions, bad driving habits, car accidents and more. There are situations that you can avoid, and some that you can’t – but regardless of the situation, you can surely cut costs. Our experts have provided you with some imperative information that will save you both time and money.

Find a Reputable Auto Glass Shop
It is imperative for you to know that every auto glass store is not the same. Unfortunately some technicians aren’t as trained as others. When it comes to something as important and your windshield, you must ensure you enter an auto glass repair shop that is both experienced and fair. Some repair shops will provide you with the wrong information so that they can make more money, and other shops may even give you the wrong information simply because they are not properly trained. If your auto glass technician is unable to identify the type of crack that you have – they are most likely not equipped to do the job. There are different techniques that must be used and those techniques depend on the type of crack that you have.
Always ask your friends and family if they have any referrals and in addition to that, do some research yourself. Hiring an auto glass company that has no clue what they are doing will result in you having to pay more for repairs. If an inexperienced company wrongly repairs your windshield, they will most likely deny that they were at fault. This would then result in a court case that would cost you 20x more than a simple auto glass repair. So, always repair to call on a professional company and avoid those who don’t seem too confident.
Don’t Just Look For Cheap Costs
I’m sure we’ve all heard the term, “you get what you pay for” right? This same statement applies in relation to the auto glass industry. If you call around and receive quotes from let’s say 5 companies, and the lowest quote is significantly lower than the rest – you should probably avoid that company at all costs. You want to hire a company that has high quality products and reasonable prices. If you have called 5 companies, go for the company that doesn’t cost too much or too little. Once you find that company, do a bit of research on them.
Repair Your Windshield ASAP
Leaving even the smallest crack in your windshield is a horrible idea. Reason being, there’s no telling when it’s going to grow. If it grows over 18 inches, you’ll need to replace your entire windshield, which, in turn, will result in you spending triple what you would have spent had you replaced your small chip. Always refrain from leaving a small crack or chip in your windshield – the result is not worth it.
Check Your Insurance Policy
Before repairing your windshield, call your insurance company and see if you’re covered. Windshield damage falls under the comprehensive section of your insurance. By checking your deductible, you can see if the cost to replace the damage is lower than your deductible. If it is lower, then you should just repair your windshield yourself. If it is higher, ask your insurance company to cover it.
Repairing your windshield will not affect your insurance rates or label you as a high risk driver.

HOW TO POLISH YOUR AUTO GLASS AT HOME

It’s inevitable that your car glass can get dirty and scratched up. Things like pebbles and dust and sand can get on your car glass and possibly damage it. Whenever you see scratches like this it might be a good idea to consider polishing your cars glass to remove the scratches.
According to many Whitby auto glass professionals, the first thing you want to do is choose

a good time and place to do this.  You don’t want to be in direct sunlight or a new really dry area when cleaning and polishing the windows of your car. If you were in areas like this could possibly try out the glass cleaner and leave streaks behind on your windshield which defeats what you actually did. You want to choose the right tools when cleaning your windows. You should purchase a glass cleaner that is specific for automotive use because it’s better than the regular house glass cleaner. Cleaners for your house often contain ammonia and other chemicals that could be dangerous to use on your car and dangerous for you in the passengers in your car.

Roll the windows of your car down just so that you can have clear access to the top edge of the glass. This way you can clean your windows properly and thoroughly. Once you do this you can spray the glass cleaner on your windows. You’ll want to spray the cleaner on a microfiber cloth and clean the window from one side to the other so that no streaks are left on the glass when it dries. You want to do this on the exterior and interior side of the glass. Once you do this you want to use the dry side of your microfiber cloth and remove any of the remaining moisture on your windows and dry them in the same motion in which you cleaned them. Once you do this you want to roll your windows back up and clean the bottom half in the same fashion.
When the windows are polished, you can move onto your front and back windshield. You will do this in the same way that you did your other windows. Once you do this you must rinse everything with water. Once you have gotten all the dirt off of your windows you can remove any streaks that you may have left behind or any residue from the cleaner or cloth by using water. Whitby auto glass workers suggest that you gently spread the glass and then wipe it dry with a clean microfiber towel.

Once the cleaning is done you can now select a glass polish that you can use on your car. There are many different types of glass polishers that are available to you. Once you do this you can apply the polish to the polishing pad.
Start at the upper corner of the glass when polishing. You want to hold the handle with your dominant hand and use your other hand to guide the polisher. Be sure to not apply pressure since to tool will apply pressure on its own. Remember to cover the entire glass and get every part of the glass one polishing. After that, buff the remaining polish residue away with a clean microfiber cloth and circular motions. As you do this, you need to apply a glass ceiling to help the glass stay smooth and clear for a longer period of time.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO CLEAN YOUR WINDSHIELD?

Just like anything else you own, your car represents you. The cleaner your car the better you look in other people’s eyes and vice versa. So you may want to think about the last time you decided to properly wash your car and whether or not it’s time for another cleaning. But let’s be honest. Some of us don’t have the time or the extra cash to wash our cars regularly. And so, many auto glass Toronto workers agree that it’s important to know how to do it on your own. This is especially important when it comes to the glass on your car because you want it to stay looking good for as long as possible. This means you have to properly take care of it and treat it well. It’s also safer for you and your passengers to keep your windshield and other windows clean because it could potentially prevent an accident.
First you want to find the right cleaning solution. This is completely up to you. Whether you want to use an ammonia-based glass cleaner or your favorite name brand cleaner or TSP or even soap and water doesn’t really matter. However, if you do decide to use an ammonia-based cleaner you want to be careful not to spill any on any leather final or rubber on your vehicle because it can be very harmful to those materials and can also be hazardous to your health.

Once you decide what cleaning solution is right for you, you will want to wash your windshield with water before using the actual cleaning solution. You want to use a soft brush to scrub the water in straight lines. You only want to use horizontal or vertical motions and there’s no need to scrub too hard because this is only the initial washed to loosen up the dirt and grime. Once you do this time to add the glass cleaning solution. Auto glass Toronto specialists say it’s a wise idea to use a spray bottle which you can find at your local dollar store so that you can have a more precise aim at the glass and avoid risking the harm to any other materials a part of your car. You’ll want to spray the cleaner on one side of a microfiber towel to begin the cleaning. You want to use long and brought strokes and move from one side of the windshield to the other so that the cleaning is actually clean and you have the clearest results. If after you do all this you still see a bit of residue, you can repeat the process over until it looks the way you would like.
Once you finish cleaning you want to allow your windshield to dry thoroughly. This will allow your view through the glass to be better and avoid any possible streaking that could happen on your windshield if you try to rush the drying. Also don’t drive whileyour windshield is still trying because any dirt in the air can attach to the water left on your windshield thus making it as if you didn’t even clean the car.
Also it’s important to know how to keep this clean for a longer time. You want to make sure that your windshield wiper fluid is full and that your blades work properly in orange streaking or broken. You should replace your blades every 2 to 3 years so that you can get the best use out of them. Don’t be afraid to actually use your windshield wiper fluid and your blades because they’re there for reason.

HOW TO GET THAT OVERALL AUTO GLASS SHINE

Ever leave a car wash dissatisfied? The metal has the shine, finesse, you can see your own reflection on it like a mirror but yet there is something missing. The section under the windshield wipers look grimy and you missed a smudge on one of the windows. Metal is lifeless and cold, you either have a scratch or a smudge. The glass however is intricate, it needs that personal touch. Without both, the car looks like a half-finished item, cold flawless steel with dotted imperfections that dull its beauty. For starters cleaning the windows from the outside is not enough, more often than not, most of the uncleanliness comes from the inside.
According to many Richmond Hill Auto Glass workers, the best way to get the perfect finish is to clean it at home. Just mop up the metal with soap, water and the right fabric while paying particular attention to the windows. Controlling your water use and using homemade cleaning agents is better for the environment. You can use natural detergents and ordinary kitchen ingredients to create a potent cleaning agent that will give you that sparkle you desire. There are a couple of easy to use, homemade concoctions, to give you crystal clear windows.

How to Get Smoke Stains Off Of Auto Glass

Take some distilled white vinegar and dilute it with about 25-30% warm water. I own a luxury and I have a lot of friends who are heavy smokers and own their own cars. They all smoke inside their vehicles. This remedy will work wonders on smoke stains. If you are a smoker and almost all your friends are smokers, someone will always have a lit cancer stick in the car. Over time this leaves a sickly, yellowish-brown stain on the windows. This solution will peel those nasty nicotine stains straight of the glass. Remember to add a touch of detergent to the mixture to increase cleaning potency.
How to Remove Stubborn Window Stains
The next potion is a tried and tested classic. Take about 50% rubbing alcohol, 50% warm water, add some ammonia and detergent and you have a homemade hammer. This will clean up almost any kind of stain you could possibly have on the window. It is kind of like grandma’s recipe. In the Richmond Hill Auto Glass industry, there are a number of other homemade cleaning agents you can use but there are also ways to make your brand unique. If you are environmentally aware, use castile soap instead of detergent in you mixtures, it is better for the environment. If you are using a vinegar base you can really make your soap stand out. You can add scented essential oils to your mixture. Essential oils with fragrance naturally bonds to the vinegar molecules. Even after the smell of the vinegar has dulled the fragrance from the oils remain. So you can save up a batch you made a couple of months ago, it would still have the scent you chose. In addition the oils increase the stain removal capabilities of your creation.

Extra Cleaning Tips

Unfortunately there are downsides. If you are making cleaning agents with kitchen products, most of the ingredients are organic, which means they disintegrate in sunlight. If you are using such ingredients, try to clean the windows on a cloudy day or at the edge of the garage, away from direct sunlight. Final tip, try to use old newspapers instead of paper towels. It is pretty much the exact same thing.

HOW TO INSTALL WINDSHIELD WIPER BLADES IN 5 EASY STEPS

Your windshield wipers are streaking so you decide it’s time to buy new ones. Before you go to your auto mechanic shop and pay what could easily become $40 to change a piece of rubber think about if you can do it on your own. If you answered no you’re wrong. It is so easy to install your own plates once you choose the right ones for your car. However, if you are in doubt, always visit your Whitby auto glass shop so that you can avoid damages.

Try it Out
Once you’ve purchased your new windshield wiper blades it’s time to install them yourself. The process is very simple so don’t feel alarmed or stressed out to do it on your own.
Step 1:
First, you want to raise the metal arm of your windshield wiper blade up and away from your windshield. You know you’ve done this correctly when I hold steady in a position perpendicular to your windshield glass. This is pretty much the exact same position you would put your windshield wipers in if it was snowing outside. You want to be careful when you do this because the metal arm of your windshield wiper blade is spring-loaded. This means that the windshield wiper arm could snap back into place and crack your windshield glass, causing you to pay the Whitby auto glass team a visit.

Step 2:
Once your windshield wiper blade is up and away from your windshield you’ll want to find the latch behind the adapter and press it. This will make the wiper blade slide down making it easier to remove.
Step 3:
After this, rest the bear hook that is exposed now that you’ve taken the wiper blade off against a cloth on the windshield. This cloth will act as a barrier and protect your windshield glass from being scratched.
Step 4:
Once this is done you’ll want to clean your windshield and the blade with mild soapy water and try it with a clean towel or cloth. This is just to remove any residue or dirt that is left on your windshield. This will also help to keep your new windshield wiper looking just as new once you start using it because the leftover dirt and residue will be removed.
Step 5:
Once you do this you want to install your new wiper blades on to the metal arm and remove the protective squeegee cover. This can be a bit difficult to explain verbally because of the many different types of windshield wipers. You can also look at the back of your windshield wiper package for any additional installation tips. After this step, you’re basically finished.
Finally

You can place the wiper blades back onto your windshield. Just make sure to be gentle because you don’t want to damage your windshield glass.
Wiper Blade Problems

Being a vehicle owner means there’s a high chance that you’ll one day experience issues with your wiper blades. HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT WINDSHIELD WIPERS FOR YOUR CAR

It’s that time year again where it’s very easy to damage your car. Whether it’s you forgetting to change your tires or want switching out your windshield wiper fluid it’s easy to grow in certain parts of your car and even put yourself in danger. It’s important to know when to switch out your windshield wiper blades. Whether it’s because your wiper blades are skipping splitting streaking or even squeaking it might be time to replace your windshield wiper blades. According to many Richmond Hill auto glass workers, it’s even more important to know how to choose which windshield wiper blade is good for you.

Costs Associated with Wiper Blades
Before you decide to change your wiper blades you need to understand why you need to change them. Because the blades are made of rubber it’s natural for them to wear out and become try after several months of use. This could be due to desk rain or even snow on your windshield. Will let you know why you need to change your blades it’s important to consider your options for changing your blades. A lot of people choose to take their car into an auto shop or an auto maintenance garage and have a mechanic change out the rubber blades or the whole wiper blade itself. This can be very heavy on your pockets considering it can cost anywhere from $15-$20 to get the new blade with the added expense of labor costs which is anywhere around $10-$20. It’s very seldom that you hear people by their own wiper blades from chain store or online and install them themselves. Even though statistic show that it’s not very common for a person to install their own wipers it’s an extremely easy process.
Know What To Change
It’s important to know what part of your wiper blade you actually need to change. There are three main parts to your windshield wiper blade. First there’s the actual rubber blade which actually comes in contact with the windshield. Then you have the wiper blade which helps to give the rubber blade structure. And then you have the metal arm which moves the wiper blade across your windshield. Once you determine which part of the windshield wiper blade you need to change you should look at the shape of the blade that comes with your car model. A lot of the newer cars have curved windshields so the blades for the car needs to be curved as well. However, there are some cars with flat windshields that would benefit more from a street wiper blade. When shopping for a new windshield wiper blade in a Richmond Hill auto glass shop, it’s also important to consider the length of your blades that are used on your car’s driver and passenger seat sides. You can measure the length of each of the blades on your own but generally most places that sell windshield wiper blades provide you with a manual to see what size of blades your car would need.

Check the Adapter Options
Once you decide on what kind of windshield wiper you want to get you should also check the adapter options that come with your windshield wiper package. Most wiper blade brands include more than one adapter type within their packaging. They do this because they want their windshield wipers to be able to be compatible with various types of metal arms. You should compare these to the previous adopter on your windshield wiper blade and choose the one that would best fit for your car.
Consider the Costs
It’s also important to consider the cost of the windshield wiper blade. Different libraries have different costs and The blades can range in price dramatically. Where you have to be doing some comparison between windshield wiper blades. You have to figure out which wiper fits your price range well and is still of good quality for your car.

RICHMOND HILL AUTO GLASS WORKERS DISCUSS HOW TO REPAIR YOUR CAR WINDOW

We have all been there, you wake up in the morning, get ready for work and just as you put the car keys in you feel tightness in your stomach which soon turns into a knot. You see a crack in the window, questions start to race through your mind, how long has it been there? How did it get there? Was it the bratty kids that play street hockey outside the house? Given your busy schedule you really do not have the time to drop the car off at the garage for the day. Unfortunately you cannot get it out of your mind; it catches your eye every time you look at the car. It is like that itch that is just out of reach. Luckily, according to many Richmond Hill auto glass workers, most windshield cracks are easily repairable.

The best possible kit you can have for the job is a bridge kit for windshield repair; it can deal with almost any kind of crack. The kit comes with a metal cleaning probe; you can use it to clear loose dirt and debris from around the crack. Place the bridge suction apparatus on the windshield or window with the injector directly over the crack. Pour in the adhesive that comes with the kit into the injector, the injector has vacuum controls that suck air out of the cracks while forcing the adhesive in. The suction cups force the glass together closing the crack. This kit can be used to deal with most car window and windshield cracks. The only downside of the system is the adhesive supplied with the kit. It only dries in UV light, so you have to undertake the project during the day and preferably on the weekend. The bridge kit itself is available in most auto supply, hardware and large retail outlets.
If the cracks are too severe you may need to change the entire window. If you drive a high end luxury vehicle, finding the right match is difficult, best thing to do is to go to your dealer. However for everyday models, surf around junkyards to find a suitable replacement. The inner door panel of a car comes off, exposing all the mounting hardware, take the bolts off, replace the window and bolt the new window back on. This method will work for simple roll up windows, electronic windows are a much trickier. The inner workings may differ car to car, so make sure you have a service manual handy so you know how to work with the cars mounting hardware and electronics.
Windshield replacement should be left to the Richmond Hill auto glass professionals. If it is a simple chip or crack you can deal it with yourself. Make sure to deal with it quick because being a larger piece of glass, temperature change and bumps cause the cracks to expand faster. Large cracks or full on replacements however should be left to the servicemen. Windshields dictate how your airbags function. If it is loosely installed the force of the airbags deploying could force it completely off the frame. Secondly windshield strength is a big part of your personal protection during a crash. If there is a chink in the windshield that compromises its strength it could be a serious factor in a collision.

Side window replacement, small cracks, little chips, can all be dealt with at home. It is a great opportunity to put on your overalls, smear some grease paint on your face and play the role of the handyman. Big safety concerns with the windshield are not a joke and unless you are a certified mechanic take your car to the garage.
Window Maintenance

Caring for your car is imperative – especially if you would like to prolong its life! The Richmond Hill auto glassworkers would like to teach you a thing or two about maintaining the appearance of your car windows – more specifically, how to remove blemishes, such as scratches. Are you aware of how to effectively do this?

FROM SCARBOROUGH AUTO GLASS TO YOU: HOW TO QUICKLY REPLACE WINDSHIELD MOLDING

There are a few key tools that you will need to complete the job:
·         Suction handle
·         A gasket tool with a plastic edge (the plastic edge is optional)
·         Screwdriver and pliers.
You must secure the suction handle to the windshield glass of your car. This could be done by pressing the suction cup the glass of the windshield and then turning the handle of the suction cup or pressing the vacuum button on the mechanism depending on what kind of suction cup you have. After this, you want to move the windshield clip that’s in the bottom center of the glass. This is the clip that holds the molding together by the ends. You’ll then want to take out the clip of the gasket and slide it from one end to the other end of the molding. Once this is done you can remove the molding strip just by pulling it out from one end until it completely comes out of the rubber gasket. You should be able to pull the rubber from the bottom center all the way around and back to the bottom.
How to Install the New Windshield Molding

To install the new molding, you’ll want to insert one end of the rubber into the bottom center of the windshield gasket. Once you do this you can push the rest of the rubber molding into the gasket’s groove all the way around the windshield glass. You want to take your time with this because moving too quickly can damage the gasket or the glass. Once you’re done putting in the molding you can use the suction handle to put the glass back into its place. Scarborough auto glass professionals ask that you be extremely careful and cautious when doing this because you don’t want to end up having to buy a new windshield because you broke your glass. This would then just add extra expense to an at home project thus making it useless to do yourself. If that happens or you’re scared of that happening, take your car to a professional. Once you do this you can remove the suction handle from off of your windshield. And then you’re done. You may want to clean your windshield with some windshield wiper fluid once you’re finished just in case and residue from the tools or molding is left over.

Know the “How-Tos”
In order to expand your knowledge, the Richmond Hill auto glass workers would like to teach you a few more things! Let’s start with this…do you know how to install auto glass? If not, check out the next post.
